Jenny Cooper Visit

Today we had a visit from illustrator Jenny Cooper. She has been an illustrator of children's books for over 20 years. Jenny talked us through the massive amount of work that goes into illustrating a book. Then she did some drawings of different faces in front of us. Finally she picked one of the children from the audience and within 5 minutes she had drawn him! She was incredible. We were so impressed that we had to try drawing some of the faces ourselves back in class. It was very cool.

Book Parade

Today we launched book week with a dress up day. We had a wide variety of book characters in Room 23 including Star Wars Jedi's, Dorothy, Little Red Riding Hood, Things, Cinderella, Harry Potter, EJ 12, Richie McCaw, a Blind Mouse and many more! Everyone looked fantastic, yet the best had to be chosen. Best dressed our class was Thing 1 and 2 (Maddie and Grace), Pirate Darkwhisker (Jordyn) and The Cat in the Hat (Jada-Lee). Best dressed boys were the Blind Mouse (Toby) and King Bill (Swastik). Here are some photos from today.

Re-Discover Christchurch

We had a great time in the city centre on Wednesday checking out all the new art work, ideas and gap fillers that have gone in there. We found out about new things that are being built in Christchurch and also came up with some ideas of our own. It was cool to find out some information about Christchurch's history, and then also be able to get a glimpse of where Christchurch will be in the near future.

Art Piece 5

This was our final piece of art done last week as part of our 5 pieces of art in 5 days challenge. It actually took us 6 days, but this last piece showing contrast between hot and cold colours is definitely my favourite.

Arts Festival

This year's Christchurch Arts Festival opens on the 22nd of August. The opening will include the hanging of 3000 Tibetan Prayer Flags made by children all around the city. They will be hung outside the City Council building until the festival is finished. St Albans was lucky enough to be a part of this. Each Year 4-6 child got to make their own prayer flag, showing their hopes and dreams for their future.  The ideas is that when the wind blows, the hopes, dreams and good fortune are carried to all people. It is exciting to be a part of this fantastic idea.

Art Piece 4

This one took a little longer than the others. We saw an example of it and thought it looked like the best of all 5 art pieces for the week, but it also turned out to be the trickiest. We used straight and curved lines and colour to create the perception of a hand under a piece of paper. Here are a few that worked out quite well.

Football Fun

Every Tuesday for the first 5 weeks of this term we have a Football in Schools session at English Park. We learn soccer skills by playing a whole range of fun games. It sure makes Tuesday a day to look forward to each week.

Art Piece 3 - Finish the Picture

Today's art - a pencil sketch to carry on a picture. Here are a few examples. It's cool to see how the same beginning can come to many different ends.
