Celebration Assembly

Yesterday we had our arts celebration including an art exhibition and a performance at both celebration assemblies. We have heard so many positive comments about the quality of the art work produced and how well the children could explain the art techniques they were learning about. And the singing was absolutely beautiful! Here it is for you all to hear.

What Talent!!!

Today was the Talent show finals. We had two groups in the finals that included room 23 children. Emma and Olivia (Rm 22) were doing a dance to Trouble Maker by Olly Murs and Grace, Niamh and Monique (Rm 27) also did a dance to Girl Next Door by Massad. Grace, Nimah and Monique got 3rd in the Senior School group and Emma and Olivia got first in the Middle School group!!! How amazing are they? They will be performing to the whole school on Friday afternoon.

Strike Percussion

Wow, today we saw the most amazing show! A group called Strike Percussion came along to school to perform for us. It was three guys (Spud, Cookie Monster and Mr T!) who played normal drums, wall drums, Cook Island drums and a giant marimba. They also had some songs that they played with fire and with cans of Fresh Up!! It was incredible. Below are a few clips to give you a bit of an idea of how cool it was. They are a bit dark but it's the sound that matters. We certainly hope that this group comes back again some time.

Athletics Day is Fast Approaching

The Senior School Athletics will be held in Week 3 of next term. Here are some tips to help you with your practices. See if you can get down to school in the weekends or over the holidays to get in some extra practise.

Shot Put and Discus:
  • Point your front arm and your eyes to where you want to throw
  • Use the power from your legs to push the shot put further
Long Jump:
  • Have a fast run up to the pit
  • Practice jumping off one foot and landing on two feet
  • Throw your arms up in the air as you jump to help push you forward
High Jump:
  • Run up from the side of the mat, not straight on to it
  • Kick your toes up high, leading with your front leg
  • Remember to land on your feet
  • You can practice your scissor kick at home. Try it on a trampoline!
Sprints and Relays:
  • Look straight ahead throughout the whole race
  • Pump your arms and make your hands slice straight through the air
  • Lean forward at the finish line
Remember:
You can't throw without your legs and
you can't jump without your arms!!

Poetry Performances

We held our Yr 4 class poetry competition on Monday. I was glad that Mrs Pelham was judging because it was not an easy task. Everyone did a fantastic job reciting their poems. But, winners had to be chosen. The results were:

1st - Bella with "Do Not Read This Poem".
2nd - Quillan with "The Animals of Tane Mahuta" that he wrote himself!
3rd - Caleb with "My Shadow".

Josh, Akki and Swastik received a highly commended for their efforts as well.

Congratulations to all of the Year 4's. Bella and Quillan also did a splendid job in the Yr 3/4 Poetry Finals this morning. Well done to you both.

Football Festival

On Tuesday afternoon English Park held a Female Football Festival to encourage girls to get into football. Since we are just next door, we got to take our girls and boys over to have a few games. It was a beautiful afternoon packed full of non-stop football. It was hot and thirsty work but heaps of fun. Hopefully after this, as well as the football lessons we have been having, we will have some girls and boys keen to get into football clubs.

Rugby Visitors

Last week we had our second visit from Marcel Cummings-Toone and Belgium Tuatagaloa. They have "adopted" St Albans School for the 2013 ITM rugby season. Marcel used to go to school at St Albans! How cool is that? This visit, senior school children who weren't busy with Kapahaka got to have a game of dodgeball with Marcel and Belgium. They loved it, and so did we!
