Art Ignition

Today we had a school-wide ignition activity to kick-off our arts inquiry for this term. We made a giant Tapa Cloth. Mrs Craig came up with the idea. She took all the classes in the hall throughout the day and showed each child how to make their own pattern to add to the school cloth.

A Tapa Cloth is traditionally made out of the bark of a a Mulberry Tree. But we didn't have any of that,  so we used brown paper bags and vivids. And it looks fantastic. Here are a few photos, but come and have a look at the real thing. It is on the wall in the hall.

Time to Tell the Time

For the first two weeks of term we are learning to tell the time on an analogue clock and to read timetables and charts. Children who finished early made some clocks out of playing cards.

THINK!!

This term we are using THINK to help us learn to get along better with others. This begins with giving more thought to the things we say to our friends and class mates. Thanks to Bella's Dad Cam for the idea, and to Bella and her helpers for creating the poster. Let's hope it helps us to all get along.

Koru Inspired Art

Last term we were learning to create koru and kowhaiwhai art work. This was a great lead-in to this term's art inquiry, as the Koru is a symbol for growth, new life and strength. Our art his term is all about the renewal and future growth of Christchurch. Here are some of the completed pieces from Term 2.

Kiwi Kids News

Here is the latest episode of Kiwi Kids News. Well done Caleb and Jada-Lee for your work producing this.

Flight Inquiries

We finished off this term by doing individual inquiries about flight. Everyone came up with their own question to find out about at home. They presented these using posters, power point presentations, word documents and even a rap! We learnt about using different sources to find our information and what a bibliography is! There are still a few to come but here are some photos or they ones that are finished. I hope we can find enough space to display them!

The Big Sleep In

Term 2's Big Day in was a giant sleep over in the hall. There were PJ's, pillow, sleeping bags, blankets, teddies and more. We even got some popcorn chips and lollies. We were going to watch a great old movie called Fly Away Home to finish off our flight inquiry for the term, but it wouldn't play. So we watched the Smurfs instead - also a great movie! Maybe you could look for Fly Away Home at the dvd shop and watch it at home.

Crusaders Again!

Finley and Toby participated in the Rugby Ready course so they were lucky enough to go to a Crusaders training at Rugby Park. They got to watch the team go through some drills and play some games, then they were allowed to line up for a few signatures. Very cool!

Christchurch Airport

Term 2 was all about flight and we were lucky enough to have a Dad who is a flight engineer! Niamh's Dad (Scott) organised for us to go to the Christchurch Airport training school and to the giant Air New Zealand hanger! It was fantastic. The favourite was definitely seeing the huge planes in the hanger and the Hercules that flies down to Antartica. We found out heaps about how planes are built and how they manage to get themselves and hundreds of people up into the air! It was very impressive. Thanks to Scott and to the parents who came along with us.

We Love Milk!!

Milk In Schools has been a pretty big hit in Room 23. We usually drink it during writing or while we listen to Ms A read our novel. Thanks Fonterra!
