Food For Thought

How healthy is the food we eat every day? Our trip to New World on Tuesday helped us work this out. We read the labels of everyday food items and occasional food items to check out the amount of sugar, fat, sodium and fibre that was in them. Using the rules we learnt last week (less than 10g of sugar, less than 10g of fat, less than 400mg of sodium and more than 5g of fibre) we could clearly see how healthy or unhealthy different food items were. We left New World with a new lunch box, a bag of apple slices and a wealth of new knowledge about food. Hopefully we can remember the food rules to help us make better choices about the things we eat each day.
Thanks to the parents/grandparents who provided transport to New World and who helped with label reading.

Living Springs

The Year 4's had a very busy and exciting three days on camp at Living Springs. It was so cool to see everyone challenging themselves, trying new things and working together with different people in the Year 4 team. I'm sure there were plenty of children, teachers and camp parents who were in bed early on Friday night! Here are some camp pictures.

He was at the tournament that Ms A went to see in Australia during the holidays. He was pretty excited that his team won, especially since they beat Australia in the final. He says hello to everyone at St Albans!

Food for Thought

Today we had our Food for Thought classroom lesson. The first part of the lesson was about sugar in drinks. It turned out the the drink with the most sugar was lemon, lime and bitters! Of course Coke and V came next. We learned that the caffeine in drinks like V actually stops kids' bodies from absorbing calcium from milk and dairy products. So that's a big fat no to energy drinks.

The second part of the lesson was to do with the food pyramid. We knew heaps about that already, which was great.

In the last part we learned how to read the labels on packaging to find out if it is healthy or not. Healthy food has less than 10g of sugar, less that 10g of fat, less that 400mg of sodium and more than 6g of fibre per 100g. It's important to make sure we read the "per 100g" column when we look for the nutritional information.

After all this we checked out our lunch boxes and put each food item on the food pyramid. It turns out that most of our lunches are really healthy. It was great to see that there were not many packaged foods in Rm 23.

Next week we get to try out our label reading skills at a real supermarket. Then we get a $60 voucher and we can plan a healthy lunch for our class to eat. Awesome!

Kids Can Cook Kitchen

Last week Chris fro the Kids Can Cook Kitchen came along to show us some healthy eating tricks as well as some cooking tips. He made french crepes (yum!) and put grated apple and chopped silver beet in them! Believe it or not, nearly everyone liked them. It was Nikole's 10th birthday so she was chosen to be the Sous Chef, which is like the second in command. Everyone got to be a taste tester. Delicious!
